One aspect of websites has been getting a lot of attention recently. And that is how to get to the top of the search engine listings. Of course, you can pay for targetted advertisements. But these can be very expensive. So the better option is to optimise your website for Search Engine Optimisation or SEO as it is called.

It is important to be on the first page of Google or other Search Engines like Yahoo or Bing as 80% people don’t go beyond the first page.

When people talk about what works and what doesn’t work, people listen to it as if thats the first time they have heard it. For example, if I was to advise my client to think about a domain name with a generic names and not proper names because, when searching, we search by generic names – we search for the word loan and not loan by abc co., that does stike as it I have told them something new. But if only they thought about their own search habbits, they would realise that its nothing more than common-sense.

So think about how you search for services on search engines. And they will give you a good idea of where to start.

After domain name, the next important things are page titles, meta tags like keywords and description and relevance of the actual page content to the domain name and title.

After things like titles, keywords, description and relevant and fresh content, you need to give it time. Search Engines do pick up fresh content and give you higher ranking for that. But it still takes them time to index your site.

The final piece of the jigsaw, beyond optimising your website for search engines and driving tonnes of traffic to it, is having a website that keeps the customers captured and coming back.

Are you providing a good service? Are you providing fantastic value for money? Is your website easy to navigate? Can your customers find your contact details? And can they buy your services easily from your website?

It is important to consider all such questions.

And once you have all these things in place, talk about your website everywhere. Use Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Bebo, etc. all channels and talk your website up. But not just that. Just like you would soon get bored of someone talking just about themselves all the time, listen to people who can be your potential customers. Listen for any problems they may be facing with your competitors. And then, without giving them a hard-sell, talk about what you can do to help.

Your business only starts with building a fantastic website. You need all the above in place if you want to run an online business.
